since returning from south america
back in october i've been posting a mixture of english and american photos. i would imagine most people would guess this animal is from the english collection, but you'd guess wrong jack, it's actually from colombia. even more strange it's from a tiny caribbean island called isla palma on the north coast of colombia, surrounded by white sand, clear water and blue skies. i've already posted a turtle
who weren't too far away from home, but they shared the island with monkeys, ostriches and even a water buffalo. it was both a surreal and distressing sight. apparently gonzalo rodriguez gacha
(aka the mexican
) who was one of the leaders of the medellin drug cartel along with pablo escobar used some of his immense wealth to buy his own private island and then populated it with animals who did not belong there. after his death the government sold the island to a private resort company who turned the zoo into an 'ecological park' and host rich tourists who want that all inclusive experience. based on the current conditions, i very much doubt that mr buffalo's quality of life has improved since the island moved from the hands of drug dealers to the hands of businessmen.
