i remember the first time i saw mulholland drive
i really liked it and i really didn't understand it. but it didn't feel like it was completely nonsensical, it felt like there were enough jigsaw pieces which i needed to try harder to slot together. so i read a bunch of fan theories and tried to wrap my head around it. i tricked myself into thinking i was on the same page, but the next time i watched it i was equally as confused. i did a bit more research and found that the director david lynch had written 10 clues
to help you figure out the film. unsurprisingly these clues were so vague that they just caused more confusion. for example the first clue was "pay particular attention to the beginning of the film: at least two clues are revealed before the credits"
. i stuck the dvd on and i swear there was nothing that occurred before the opening credits. clue number two was "notice appearances of the red lampshade"
. i dug around a bit more to see if i could eek out any significance from this, but i was just left with a bigger headache. i finally arrived at an enlightenment of sorts - i realised that it doesn't really matter if i fully understand what happened, as i still enjoyed it. so now i can see spooky decor in a cape town restaurant and just think huh that looks like it's from a david lynch movie... he makes weird films.
