while walking around kota kinabalu
i noticed lots of street stalls selling this spiky fruit called durian. i'd heard it was somewhat infamous for it's distinctive taste, and i was curious to try it for myself. the dude at the market said i could pick any that i wanted, and if it was bad i wouldn't have to pay. i picked the smallest specimen, he hacked it open, and i slurped the insides. everything about it was disgusting. from the slimy texture to the overpowering taste which was somewhere in the rotten onions arena. so i did what most british people would, i thanked the man, said it was delicious and paid in full. i tried mints, brushing my teeth and drinking beer but nothing would get the taste out of my mouth. in fact the beer was a mistake, as the gas made me burp afterglows of the rotten taste for the entire evening. the thing is, the locals love
durian, so much so they call it the king of fruits, and the markets were plentiful with malaysians buying and eating the fruit. i tried it again twice at this market, but the locals must be tasting something different to me as i could not get past the repulsive flavour. so i admitted defeat, bought a packet of durian flavoured candy, and brought it back to work to inflict the sensation on my colleagues. i think i now have a lifetime ban on bringing travel gifts into the office.
