as i usually do when i roll into somewhere fairly posh and expensive, i felt a bit out of place walking into the lobby of the hotel where i stayed in hamburg. i think the feeling must have been mutual, as while the staff were very courteous - they were adamant they had no record of me having a room at that hotel. i said i'd make some phonecalls to sort it out, but all the contacts i tried were unavailable so i had to hang about in reception for about an hour until someone with sufficient authority, and crucially german linguistic skills, explained that yes i was on the list and i did have a room. any annoyance or resentment soon vanished when i got the keycard and walked into 708. it was full of cool, quirky touches from the background green lighting
to the seats in strange triangle shapes, the arty lighting integrated with the bed and the turquoise bath with huge feet. there was also a huge bed, huge wall mounted tv and a huge shower. add to that a delicious breakfast with a floor-to-ceiling window view of the beautiful lake
and it was close to being the perfect hotel. critically though, it didn't have any wi-fi, so it only gets 4 stars from me.
another odd/cool touch was this hand shaped ashtray. i was thinking of going for a similar shot to my shell
photo which i put up a couple of years ago, i figured that might be easier to achieve than last years invisible ipod
effort. in the end i found it a handy place to put my change, so i just took a picture of that in the morning. here's the original
