as i wrote a few days ago, the reason that i went back on myself to pucon was the active villarrica volcano. as pretty as it looked from the town, i wasn't just satisfied with seeing it there, i wanted to climb the smoking beast. last saturday that's exactly what happened. the ascent of around 1200m took around 5 hours, walking on a combination of rocks and snow. whilst altitude wasn't an issue, the summit is 'only' 2847 metres, it certainly wasn't a leisurely stroll. we were fully prepared though with crampons, ice axes and snickers bars. i'm still yet to look through all my photos, but this was relatively early on, looking back out from the volcano to the other mountains in the distance.
