starsailor are a band who never quite did it for me. i've liked a couple of their songs, but on the whole didn't rate their music and found it a bit maungy, somewhat of a surprise considering the music that i like. well, as you may have guessed from the use of the past tense, they turned me around at the gig. far from being depressing i found the music had a really good rhythm and energy to it. the lead singer was quite charming in an understated way and his voice, which for me was always teetering on the balance of being annoying, was really powerful. i think that they only found out about the concert a week previous, as they were replacing the coral who pulled out, and they got a good reception, and reaction, from the crowd. they joked to the audience "thanks a lot, we'd love to come back next year... and headline". based on their performance i wouldn't complain if they did.
